When We Stop Talking About New Years’ Goals

Re-evaluating goals in March

I seriously cannot believe it’s March. This is the month my baby girl turns a year old, and I’m just in complete denial over it.

At the beginning of the year, I sat down with my planner and wrote some goals in the beginning of every month for the first 4 months of the year. I had blogging goals, photography goals, home improvement goals, and fitness goals. I went so overboard as to write a post about them and everything. When I flipped to March the other day to write some things down, I saw these goals I had written a mere two months ago. And I realized I’m nowhere near half of them.

I’ll admit- a brief moment of feeling like a failure ensued. I mean, seriously, who is so far off course within two months?! Then I felt calm because, seriously, no one is talking about goals and resolutions anymore. This is the time of year when everyone starts forgetting what they were so excited about when the year turned.

I wasn’t really happy with that, either, though. And I figured that just because what I originally planned wasn’t happening wasn’t a good enough reason to stop planning anything altogether. I just had to go back to the drawing board, so to speak.

Setting goals for the rest of the year

1. Home Improvement 

So I’m not gunna lie…this one is super frustrating for me. If you follow me on Instagram or watch my stories over there, you know we are finishing renovating our closet. Just now finishing. This was supposed to be our January project. It took over February, and won’t be fully done until halfway through March. Naturally, this threw off our other projects. Instead of getting frustrated, I’m trying to recognize that we have a pretty strict budget we need to stick to. This limits the number of things we can do at a time, and I do want everything to be done right. Our closet looks amazing and I’m so happy with it. I can easily make up time on other projects, or just skip the unnecessary ones altogether.

2. Exercise

This is just laughable. I have not done a thing since the new year started. It’s my goal to run a half marathon in the fall. I’m hoping with the time change coming up, I’ll be able to sneak away for a run when Dan gets home from work. I also need to get better about doing a quick DVD during the day just to get my heart pumping. It scares me a little seeing how off course (let’s be real, not even on course) I am at the moment, but I’ve definitely trained for a half marathon on less time, so I know I’ll still be able to hit this goal.

3. Blogging

I’m doing fairly well on this goal, actually! I made it a goal to blog once a week, and with the exception of one week, that’s happened! I’ve been wanting to get better about sending out a newsletter (make sure to sign up for that at the bottom!), and I have that in the works for March. So that took me longer than originally planned. But I mean, this year is flying by already, amiright?! I also segued out and am providing stock images for other bloggers, which is super exciting! (Make sure to snag those here!) To be super honest with you, towards the end of last year, I was so excited about my photography business that I lost a little excitement with blogging. Don’t you worry, though- it’s back! 😉

4. Photography

So I’ve hit all my written goals for this, but I’ve really struggled with feelings of inadequacy, disappointment, and discouragement. My written goals were very tangible things, office work. I avoided writing down any numerical goals like income or a certain number of clients because I doubted my ability to make that happen. Even more important than that, though, I’ve been able to put that discouragement aside and keep going. I’ve scheduled things for myself and am just plugging away, which is the most I can do. I’m really having to surrender this little business to the Lord, which is how I want it to be. I’m still planning on setting some big goals for ABP for the fall, and I’m trusting God to provide and make ’em happen!

So why am I telling you this?

So my whole point in sharing this with y’all is to encourage you, in case you’re where I am and starting this month of by realizing that you’re not fully on track. That’s ok! Please don’t feel discouraged and like there’s no point in working towards your goals! Sit down! Reflect! Re-strategize! Take stock to see what is working and what needs adjusting. Your goals may need tweaking, and how you accomplish them may look different than what you originally thought, but you can still do it. Let’s make this the year that New Years’ goals aren’t forgotten two months after they’re made.

Life happens. It all seems so easy at the beginning of the year. You have New Years’ excitement, your calendar is pretty sparse. Anything is possible. And then the kids get a cold and family comes to town or you leave town. And school events and dinosaur exhibits- and life happens! It’s honestly not feasibly (at least for me with 2 littles) for everything I originally planned to happen. Could we have finished our closet in January? Maybe. But instead we opted for a dino exhibit where our 2.5 year old had the time of his life. And I regret nothing. Re-evaluate your goals, and now that we’re farther into the year, just make some room for life to happen!
